Strategy[edit]
For a Choke card, Deft is somewhat harder to use effectively compared to other Shire choke entries like A Talent for Not Being Seen (1U316) and Bill the Pony (3U106) . Due to the "snapshot" ruling on how it works (see below), it only affects sites which are in play at the time it is played.
Since it is a Regroup Phase event, this means that on its own it only has any effect if you are behind on the site path. which is not a position a choke deck wants to be in. Choke does not want to double; the point is to avoid adding Twilight, after all.
It can however be comboed with cards that pathfind the next site during the regroup phase, such as Thrór's Map (1R318) or Get On and Get Away (4R304) . The card also stacks with itself, so it can self-combo if you have multiple copies to really crank up the choke level.
Strengths and Weaknesses[edit]
Synergizes With...[edit]
- Thrór's Map (1R318)
- Get On and Get Away (4R304)
- Other Choke cards (consider 4 Hobbits + A Talent for Not Being Seen (1U316) + Bill the Pony (3U106) + Thrór's Map (1R318) + Deft dragging The Bridge of Khazad-dûm (1C349) down to a mere , making the Balrog unplayable even with that site's steep discount)
Strong Versus...[edit]
- Any Shadow card that costs twilight, which is checks notes almost all of them.
Weak Versus...[edit]
- Moria, which can bootstrap their own twilight generation with several cheap or free card options
Rulings[edit]
This card is affected by the aptly-named "snapshot rule", which means that only cards which were in play at the moment the event was played get effected; the event takes a "snapshot" of the game state and does not update it when cards are later played.
Some event cards affect only cards that are currently in play, even though their effects might seem to apply to cards played later in the same turn. These events take a "snapshot" of the current game state, and only those cards are affected.
Deft in Their Movements (2C99)
(Regroup: "Spot 2 Hobbits to make each site's Shadow number –2 until the end of the turn.") affects only sites that are in play when it is played.
